Mother's Day: the perfect moment to give back a little bit of all the love, care and warmth to your mother.
Aim to make that day carefree and give her extra attention.
Give her a warm and long hug and a big kiss!
But how did Mother's Day actually come about?
And is it celebrated the same way all over the world?

The Origin of Mother's Day
On this day we celebrate en masse that mothers have performed the greatest miracle on earth: giving life to a baby. But also the influence that mothers have on society and on the growing children is celebrated. A kind of thank you.
Mother's Day, as we know it today, has its origins in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. These ancient cultures honored mother goddesses in festivals called Matronalia, which symbolized her fertility, motherhood, and love.
The current version of Mother's Day was introduced in the United States in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis . She wanted to honor her mother for her efforts to create "a day of appreciation" for the work women do for society. Anna's mother passed away, so she created a day to honor all mothers.
From that moment on, the news spread quickly throughout the US. It became an officially recognized day. Since then, Mother's Day has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.
When is Mother's Day celebrated in other countries?

Mother's Day is celebrated all over the world, but the dates and ways in which it is celebrated vary from country to country.
In many countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Suriname and Turkey, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. It is a day on which children spoil their mothers with flowers , (self-made) presents, breakfast in bed and sweet gestures.
In France, Sweden, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, this day for mothers is celebrated on the last Sunday in May.
In the UK, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This means that this usually corresponds to late March or early April. In the UK, it is customary to treat your mother to a special lunch or dinner, flowers and cards.

In other parts of the world, such as the Middle East and parts of Asia, this special day is often celebrated on March 21, the first day of spring. In these cultures, the emphasis is on family gatherings where special dishes are prepared and eaten and the exchange of gifts.
The commercial aspect of Mother's Day
Although Mother's Day began as a simple celebration of motherly love , this day, like many others, has become increasingly commercialized.
Instead of a day on which children spoil their mothers with crafts and attention, it has increasingly become a day on which they have to go all out with (large) gifts.

Also, gifts are no longer given only by children, but also by partners. Companies are responding to this development and offer a range of luxury products.
The commercial side of Mother's Day and also Father's Day is often criticized , because it seems to overshadow the original meaning of this special day and puts pressure on people to spend (more) money.
LAYZIN reflects on the original meaning of Mother's Day
At LAYZIN we like to reflect on the original meaning of this day. Because although it is easy to be seduced by commercialism, there are many unique ways to celebrate Mother's Day and reflect on the true meaning of the day. Without celebrating Mother's Day costing you a lot of money. Below are some tips:

-
Write a personal letter or poem: Take some time to write a personal card or letter or poem telling your mom how much she means to you. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it will be appreciated. Think of all those crafts you did as a child!

-
Plan a 'special moment ' instead of a 'tangible thing'.
Hug your mother for at least 20 seconds , this will release happiness hormones .
Sit somewhere by the water with a cup of coffee and a snack.
-
Help others: Please consider donating to a charity that works to help mothers and children in need . It’s a great way to spread love and gratitude.
- Go with your mother and leaf through an old photo album or watch old video recordings . Let her tell you about her youth. These are often very nice stories. And maybe you recognize yourself in the events she experienced.
