Beef Collagen vs. Fish Collagen: What Are the Differences and Which Should You Choose?
Our bodies contain a lot of protein. Collagen is one of the most important proteins in our bodies, responsible for the firmness and elasticity of our skin. But the production of this protein decreases by as much as 1% every year from the age of 25, and from the age of 30, this process accelerates. And you notice it. Due to this decrease in collagen levels in your skin, its elasticity decreases, and signs of aging become visible.
Did you know you can support collagen production in your body by taking collagen supplements? Collagen powder in the right form and quantity helps you regain that beautiful glow and firmness.
There are no fewer than 28 types of collagen; most tissues and organs contain different types. Several types of collagen occur naturally in skin and hair, each with its own unique properties.
We explain the difference between the three most common types:
-
Collagen type 1
Type I collagen forms the foundation of skin, bones, tendons, and connective tissue. This type of collagen is known for firming the skin and reducing signs of aging.
-
Collagen type 2
Collagen type 2 is mainly found in cartilage and plays an important role in joint health and mobility.
-
Collagen type 3
Collagen type 3 is often combined with type 1 and is found in the skin, blood vessels, and organs. It contributes to skin elasticity, supple joints, and wound healing.
Collagen supplements for your body are made from collagen derived primarily from cattle (bovine) or fish (marine). When choosing the right collagen supplement, a distinction is often made between fish collagen and bovine collagen.
What is the difference between bovine collagen and fish collagen?
Fish collagen
Fish collagen (marine) is derived from fish and consists primarily of type I collagen. Fish collagen is often used to combat signs of skin aging. However, a high dosage is required to see any noticeable skin improvement. A disadvantage of fish collagen is that people who are sensitive to fish are more likely to have an allergic reaction to this type of collagen.
Bovine collagen
Bovine collagen is rich in collagen types 1 and 3, making it a powerful collagen supplement for skin, hair, nails, and joints. Studies show that bovine collagen is more effective at slowing fine lines and wrinkles because it primarily stimulates collagen production in the skin. Bovine collagen is also better absorbed by the body, making it the most effective collagen type.
Vegan Collagen
Collagen is sometimes claimed to be vegan. But vegan collagen doesn't exist; it's always animal-based. So if you read that a brand contains vegan collagen, be skeptical. That's not collagen. It's often claimed that you can boost your collagen in the skin with many other vitamins. But you only need vitamin C to boost your collagen production; the other ingredients are unnecessary and offer no benefit.
LAYZIN collagen powder
Science shows that bovine collagen has the best effect on skin improvement and rejuvenation. Fish collagen may also have a positive effect, but to a much lesser extent.
To offer the best collagen powder at LAYZIN, we use VERISOL® collagen. This hydrolyzed bovine collagen is much more easily absorbed than standard collagen and is also halal-certified.
We've also supplemented the high-dose collagen in LAYZIN collagen powder with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Hyaluronic acid has a positive effect on skin hydration, and vitamin C plays an important role in the collagen production process.
Furthermore, we have not added any other unnecessary vitamins and minerals that do not make a useful contribution to skin improvement.
