Is collagen just hype? Ayla and Sanne: Our 90-day collagen trial with LAYZIN

Collagen has been revealed as supplement of the year
Ayla (38) and Sanne (44) have been friends for years. Together they have tried countless beauty trends, from masks to retinol serum, from microneedling to green smoothies.

But they were skeptical about collagen powder. Does it really work as promised? Or is it mostly marketing?

They decided to put it to the test with a 90-day trial and consciously opted for the LAYZIN Collagen Complex (Verisol®, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C), Animal Welfare - Halal & Kosher certified, without gluten, lactose or unnecessary additives such as E-numbers.

Where did this collagen trend come from?

Every week, we scrolled through videos of celebrities and influencers promoting collagen. Trade magazines and TV shows like Radar highlight its skin-rejuvenating effects, while Facebook groups feature photos of "before and after" results. And doctors who administer injectables themselves speak negatively about collagen powder...! But how reliable is all that?

We looked into it.
Your body produces its own collagen, but less and less as you age.
We already know that collagen is an essential protein and that our body consists mainly of collagen proteins in various tissues such as skin, joints, muscles , etc.

We read online that it supports the skin, tendons, connective tissue, and joints. But it doesn't cure diseases like diabetes or serious intestinal disorders . While you might experience some benefits, it's not a cure. It's not a medicine, but a type of protein, so it's a protein supplement.

By the mid-forties, you'll only have half (!) of your original supply. Menopause is already setting in. "From menopause onward, collagen deficiency becomes truly visible," we read, according to dermatologist Dr. McMartin.

Less collagen means sagging skin, more wrinkles, a duller complexion, and brittle nails. This is because the same type of collagen is present there, and therefore the collagen content decreases. This is a natural process. Because of this sagging skin, your cellulite also becomes more visible.

Therefore, by using the right collagen powder you can replenish this natural decrease.

But how and which collagen works best?

Searching for a good collagen supplement

We didn't want low-budget collagen from an unknown source and certainly not a supplement full of fillers or sugars ,” says Ayla .

We also did n't want a bag that required you to dip your whole hand into it with a spoon, which would get your hand dirty. We also considered jars of collagen powder, but we were convinced that it's not good for air and light to get in every time you open a jar. Ultimately, we opted for pre-measured bags .

It was quite a search. Because all collagen brands claim the same thing. But how do you, as a consumer, find out what's true?

LAYZIN appealed to us because of its Verisol® collagen with small, bioactive peptides. This collagen is hydrolyzed (we'd never heard of it before), meaning its molecular size is only 2000 Daltons, making it optimally absorbable by the body.

The brands we tested all have a molecular size between 5,000 and 8,000 Daltons, which can't be absorbed through the intestinal wall. That's why those collagen powders don't really work. They're also cheap and useless.

Sanne: "Good to know: the cattle aren't slaughtered for the collagen, but for meat consumption. And the collagen is extracted from the remaining parts (such as the hide). We came across some interesting information during our search. So, there's a collagen powder with three certifications: Animal Welfare, Halal, and Kosher. That impressed us ."

Because if you do your research, you'll find that almost all brands claim their powder is the best. We read online that fish collagen was supposed to be better, but that turns out not to be the case. On the contrary, because bovine collagen is closest to human collagen (humans and cattle are both mammals).
In addition, bovine collagen only contains one type of collagen, and you should consume at least 25-35 grams of fish collagen per day. However, if you already have a strong reaction to fish, you shouldn't use fish collagen.

In addition, the food is halal (important for Ayla) and free of unnecessary substances: no gluten, lactose, sugar, E-numbers, anti-caking agent silicon dioxide, or hormones. The clean label and Dutch brand also convinced us to start the LAYZIN 90-day collagen trial.

Contents LAYZIN Collagen Complex
Nothing more, nothing less per sachet: 5000 mg hydrolyzed collagen, 100 mg hyaluronic acid, 200 mg vitamin C (deacidified, so better for the stomach), and 23 mg calcium. The taste is neutral: perfect for coffee, tea, water, smoothies, yogurt, and even baking. You can take it on an empty stomach in the morning or just before bed.

The test: a collagen bag every day for 90 days

Day 1: Ayla and Sanne begin their test diary. Ayla dissolves the powder in her coffee in the morning, Sanne adds it to her fruit yogurt, but alternates between adding it to her tea and honey.

Week 1-2: Patience is a virtue. Neither of them notices much difference yet. However, the neutral taste is noticeable—no bitter aftertaste, no clumping. "Because it fits so easily into my routine, I'm sticking with it," says Sanne .

Week 4-5: The first subtle changes. Friends say: you look good? Have you done anything about your skin? Ayla notices her skin looks less dull; Sanne's nails hardly break anymore.

In their online research they read the same thing: scientific studies show that wrinkle depth decreases by an average of more than 7% after four weeks, and by up to 20% after eight weeks of daily use of Verisol® B (bovine) bovine collagen.

Dermatologist Dr. McMartin explains: "Hydrolyzed collagen isn't absorbed directly by the face, as collagen is found throughout your skin. It stimulates the body's own collagen production. Regular intake is crucial, and a sufficient dose of 5000 mg per day is ideal."

Week 6-8: Now it's getting interesting. Ayla notices baby hairs growing near her hairline, and those hairs seem to be growing faster, but she also notices her eyelashes are getting fuller. "I didn't know that was possible!"

Fine lines around the mouth and eyes have softened. Studies also show that skin elasticity increases by an average of 17% with daily collagen use. Social media is overflowing with positive reviews and before-and-after photos, many of which are based on an eight-week routine.

Weeks 9-12: "Collagen isn't a magic filter, but it does work," says Sanne . "My skin is definitely firmer, shines, and my nails stay strong, even after gardening . People say I look fresher and more relaxed."

Ayla : "I also notice my face looks fresher, I get compliments, and I think it gives me beautiful, smoother skin. Even colleagues ask what I've changed about my face, haha."

Proven collagen results based on science

After 90 days, Ayla and Sanne take stock. Their wrinkles have softened. Their skin has a youthful glow and feels elastic and firmer. Their hair grows well, their eyelashes are noticeably longer, and their nails no longer break. This aligns with international studies on hydrolyzed collagen powder produced in Germany. Quality is evident in:

  • Skin elasticity increased by an average of 17% (Cosderma Institute).

  • After three months, cellulite was reduced; the connective tissue became smoother (University of Kiel).

  • Skin moisture levels increased after a few weeks (Korean study), partly due to the hyaluronic acid in this LAYZIN collagen complex.

Critical remarks and pitfalls

Critics say: "Not everyone experiences the same improvement." Ayla and Sanne agree . Sometimes they see hair change faster than skin, and sometimes it's the nails.

Consistency is key: one sachet every day. The quality of the powder is equally important. Cheap or filler-rich collagen powders are usually disappointing.

“You don't get a quick fix, but with LAYZIN you will notice a definite improvement after 3 months,” says Ayla.
Sanne : "If you stop taking collagen, you'll notice that problem areas slowly return, even within 3-4 weeks. That motivates me to keep going."

Final verdict after 90 days of collagen powder LAYZIN

Ayla : "I recommend LAYZIN Collagen Complex to anyone who wants to invest in firm, youthful-looking skin, strong hair, and healthy nails. It's easy to use, tasteless, and reliable."

Sanne : "It works, so for me it's not just hype, but a proven tool. Especially the fact that LAYZIN is a clean-label collagen, without gluten, lactose, hormones, or E-numbers.
Sometimes you see brands adding all sorts of other substances that you don't even need every day because they're minerals you get in sufficient quantities from your diet. But I think that's a lure!

A small investment, a big result, especially if you're looking for an effective collagen supplement without any frills or unnecessary ingredients. Did you know that too many certain substances in your body can actually throw you off balance? Doctors don't advocate taking vitamins daily. Simply eating vegetables, some raw vegetables, and fruit with a handful of nuts every day, along with drinking 1.5 liters of water, will go a long way.

Do you have any questions for us? Or would you like to experience it for yourself?
Try the 90-day trial. Who knows, you might be just as enthusiastic as we are after three months.
