What is the DHT hormone?

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone produced during the conversion of testosterone. This is done by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT plays a key role in the development of male sexual characteristics and is therefore an important hormone. However, DHT can have a negative effect on hair follicles on the scalp. What is a DHT Blocker?

A DHT blocker prevents DHT from binding to a cell. Such agents are therefore often used for hair loss , where the goal is to prevent DHT from binding to hair follicles as much as possible.

This can be done in two ways:
1) Systemic , which usually involves taking a pill or capsule that blocks DHT. Systemic means it has an effect throughout the body. This is also why many people prefer to avoid such medications. DHT also has important functions in the body, such as regulating libido. Blocking DHT systemically can cause side effects such as loss of libido.

2) Topical, which usually involves applying a liquid substance with a DHT blocking effect to the scalp. This substance then penetrates the skin and essentially has only a local effect. It is therefore not absorbed into the bloodstream. The advantage is that you don't experience any unpleasant side effects. The disadvantage is that it often requires a bit more effort than simply taking a pill, as with a systemic agent.

How does the hair growth cycle work?

In the ANAGENE phase (growth phase), your hair grows from the hair follicle. On average, this growth period lasts 9 to 12 weeks. However, this can be significantly shorter due to various factors, such as hormonal changes or genetic predisposition.

Worse still, your hair follicle can prematurely enter the catagen phase . This is when a hair follicle detaches from your scalp and receives increasingly less oxygen and nutrients. While the hair remains attached to your scalp and doesn't fall out yet, it can no longer grow.

Next, a hair follicle enters the TELOGEN phase : this is also called the resting phase. No new hair grows during this phase. Your hairs, which had previously detached from the follicles in the catagen phase, fall out during this resting phase. Normally, the hair follicle then returns to the anagen phase and grows new hairs again. And the cycle begins again.

Using a dermaroller

A dermaroller contains a roller with microneedles. This roller rolls over your skin, causing controlled micro-damage . During the healing process, substances are released that have a stimulating effect.
When used on the skin it has a rejuvenating effect, but when used on the scalp it stimulates hair growth.

The answer to that is: it doesn't happen automatically. You do have to put in some effort. Of course, it also depends on the extent of your hair loss and the balding areas on your head. The more dormant hair follicles, the longer the treatment will take.

We recommend dermarolling for about 3-4 months, at a frequency of once every three days. Some people notice a change after a few weeks. This varies from person to person, so it's a matter of trying out what works for you.
